Ruppiner Land


The 'Ruppiner Land' region is characterized by its forests, lakes, meadows, fields, lowlands, hills and marshes. Historical town centres and navigable canals simply belong to this region.

  • Fürstenberg upon Havel:
    Ravensbrück is a part of the town of Fürstenberg upon Havel. The memorial tells visitors about the history of the former concentration camp in Ravensbrück where 132,000 children and women as well as 20,000 men from many different European countries were taken and tens of thousands were killed.
  • Lindow:
    Around 1230 Earl Gebhard of Anstein–who also called himself 'Graf von Lindow and Ruppin'– founded a nunnery here.
  • Neuruppin:
    birth places of Theodor Fontane (1819-1898) and Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841). Here the so-called "Neuruppiner Bilderbogen" was developed (predecessor of today's magazines; topics: education, entertainment and information for everybody). From 1732 until until his royal coronation in 1740 Frederic of Prussia commanded over the regiment.
  • Oranienburg:
    (formerly: Bötzow) In 1650 a gift by Frederic William to his wife Luise Henriette of Oranien
  • Sachsenhausen:
    built in 1936 as concentration camp  (until 1945 200,000 prisoners from 47 countries were imprisoned here, more than 100,000 were killed by the SS)
  • Rheinsberg:
    Crown prince Frederic, who later on became King Frederic II of Prussia, lived here from 1736 until 1740, since 1762 pottery production
